Yes! Attending Reunion
Do you have any memories of your high school years? Tell us!

Actually I still sometimes dream about NDHS..usually can't find my locker and can't remember my combination. I remember my mother making me a new outfit for the beginning of each new school year. One year in gymnastics we wore fluorescent tape around our wrists and ankles and as we did our tumbling routine the lights were off and the tape glowed in the dark..loved being in the Operettas.

I enjoyed English and Algebra but found science and geometry hard. I remember Mr. St. John and my dad telling me he also taught him. My father and Mr. St. John were good friends in later years.

I worked in the cafeteria so I could eat lunches there, it was the first time I had real butter! The meals were good. There was a time walking down the hall when a mouse ran around our legs! That was frightening.

It was a great year when I took 12C everything seemed to come together, my marks were very good and it would be the year I graduated.

It will be wonderful to see people at the reunion I've lost contact with..this website is amazing..

I lived on Washington Avenue when attending High School and it was quite a long, cold walk in the winter months. Girls didn't wear slacks or jeans to school then and my legs would be frozen by the time I got to school..sleeping on prickly rollers and bobbie pins so my hair would look good for school is not something I'd like to repeat now.

I remember being on Canadian Bandstand with Dennis McCready..I believe someone came to the High School and picked out students to appear on that show..I wore a white blouse and a black and white polka dot skirt. Those were the days...

Are you looking forward to the reunion?

Yes, very much so. It will be great to see old friends and catch up on the years that have gone by. It will be such a walk down memory lane. It's a wonderful idea and I hope many, many people show up for it.

After High School I moved to London, Ont. and worked in an office at Drug Trading Co. I met my first husband there, married in May, 1965 and quit work after our first child, Jennifer was born in 1967.
Jamie was born three years later. I did some babysitting in my home. We moved to St. Marys, Ont. when it was time for Jennifer to start school.
I worked in a nursing home a few blocks from our home for a few years.
Other jobs I held working part-time were; waitressing, also worked in a toy/candy store, bakery shop and in 1989 went on a trip with my mother to England and Scotland. My children attended public and high school in St. Marys.

My last job in St. Marys was as a church secretary for 8 years.
I am now retired and writing my memoirs. I am leading a memoir's group at our town library. I also attend a second writing group at the library and have tried my hand at writing poetry. I am an very avid gardener. I have many flower beds and keep a vegetable garden every year.

I still like to crochet, my grandmother taught me when I was about 12 yrs. of age. I read a lot and since I live in Muskoka, where we get a lot of snow, I shovel a fair bit. I am learning to knit better, want to learn how to knit socks. Do a bit of sewing..enjoy making quilts.

We vacation in P.E.I. quite a bit and I also spent a marvelous week traveling the Cabot Trail with my son about four years ago. My partner and I enjoy traveling very much.

The reunion has now come and gone but the memories of the good time I had there will live on forever. Connecting with former friends was a delight, seeing myself in a picture receiving my gift in front of Arn's was a blast..the meal at the dance was so scrumptious and it was while standing in line I heard a great story about my dad..the whole event was tremendous, many, many thanks to those who made it all possible..I raise my hat to you all..thanks for the memories.

Do you still have family around Norwich?

I still have some cousin's living in Norwich and one uncle and his wife. My parents are deceased, miss them terribly. They are both buried out at the Quaker Cemetary.

How often do you get back to Norwich?

Not very often. Less than once a year. My parents are buried out at the Quaker Cemetery so I like to get out there every couple of years if possible.

After the reunion on Sunday I was able to place flowers on their grave. It seemed so appropriate to be able to do it after the reunion and seeing both parents pictures in many photos at the Legion in Norwich..

What do you do now?

I am happily retired. Yet, when is a woman ever fully retired? There is always a lot to do and interests to keep us busy..I think our mother's excelled in "Guilt 101" as I find it hard not to do anything and just relax! Thanks mom!

My husband and I are also starting renovations on an old farmhouse we bought in P.E.I. this past November. When my husband retires in five years I will no longer by a "towny" but be living in the country on 35 acres on the island about twenty minutes from Montague..can't wait!

What did you always want to do that you haven't done yet?

I've wanted to travel more. I would dearly like to travel to the Tuscany region of Italy. I'd like to return to England and Scotland again and visit Ireland. My brother Kim has visited Ireland many times. I'd like to get more involved in painting in watercolors and to learn how to weave baskets.

I want to go up in a helicopter or a small plane and fly over Muskoka..that might be a reality this summer.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I like to read, watch old black and white movies. I enjoy looking at decorating and gardening magazines and also crochet or knit. Visit friends and email friends. Go shopping! Have friends from afar come and stay over..enjoy my penpal in England..

I do a lot of walking, love watching the birds in our back yard at the feeder. I garden all summer long with many perennial beds and have a vegetable garden. We enjoy playing cards with friends. We go dancing every Friday night..also sit outside listening to live music at various venues in town. Our summer holidays will now be spent in Prince Edward Island renovating our farmhouse.

How old do you feel?

How old do I feel? It depends on the day. After a long day of gardening I might feel like ninety. But usually I feel like I'm twenty-five!

Might feel older or might feel younger as we anticipate the arrival of our very first grandchild in February 2011. Jim's daughter Carly and husband Chad will be new parents.

Any grey hair yet? Women don't have to honestly answer this one:)

Most of my hair is grey now, but then I've earned them all..I tried blond streaks about ten years ago, it wasn't me..I actually like my grey hair a lot and get many compliments on it.

What would we be surprised to know about you?

That I still love to dance..Jim and I have "date" night every Friday night, go out to a restaurant, then go to the Legion in town. They have different musicians each week and a small dance floor.
I'm a published author. The book is an anthology of Memoirs and I have two stories in it, one is called "Those Were the Days".. a few memories of being a teenager in Norwich.

That four friends from NDHS get together yearly in the summer for three days and we talk, shop and eat..it's wonderful

Did you have any nicknames in school?

Yes, my friend's brother nicknamed me Harry Harrison. My given name was Liane but a friend of my mother's nicknamed me Lannie at birth and very few people call me Liane. All my family call me Lannie as well as most of my close friends.

Biggest thing you would do differently if you went back to your time at NDHS?

Study "weeks" in advance for exams and make sure I knew which exam I was supposed to be studying for..once I studied for the wrong one until a friend informed me what I should have been studying for..that was a real night of panic...

Try not to worry so much and enjoy those years more.
